My USA Palomino 15 watter (bought new around '05) came w/ the 70/80 and it was a little harsh at first, but it broke in well and really smoothed out.

WebJan 25, 2024 · I have the USA version of the Crate V16 Palamino and I followed some suggestions from the designer, Obeid Khan. Here's what I did: 1) I replaced the 12AX7 V1 preamp tube with a JJ 5751. You can also try other low gain preamp tubes ( 12AT7, 12AU7 ), but the 5751 works fine for me.
But I needed to thin the herd and sold the V16. God, I got a great lead tone out of that amp, and goosing it with a Germania had the notes just exploding off the pick. To the OP, regardless of your amp's EQ settings, I left the boost button engaged, as it helped balance out the upper and lower parts of the sonic spectrum.
